In free play, teachers focus on stimulating children’s intrinsic motivation to learn and encourage them to participate independently and freely. Children can choose their own play materials, decide on the steps before, during, and after free play, select playmates, and explore different activity areas.
Through free play, we enhance the elements of discovery-based learning. Fun activities and games are the source of children’s happiness, and happiness is the key to igniting learning. Our school’s educational mission is to help each child grow and develop in a joyful environment. Games serve as effective learning strategies. Therefore, our school is moving toward a teaching approach that emphasizes “discovery-based learning through free play.” By optimizing the school environment and creating more space for play exploration, we aim to foster creativity, problem-solving skills, and a spirit of independent learning in children.
Our school divides free play into three stages:
1. Before Play
Teachers create an inviting environment and set up materials based on children’s interests and experiences to enhance their motivation to participate actively in play.
2. During Play
We reduce strict rules during play, allowing children to choose materials, invite playmates, and design game rules based on their preferences and abilities, thus increasing the enjoyment of play.
